Sihem Souid traveled to Madagascar with a group of French journalists between 23 and 28 May. A short stay dedicated to discovering an island nation grappling with far-reaching change, which the visiting journalists set out to explore in depth.
The journalists met with entrepreneurs, government ministers and vanilla producers, and sat down with Father Pedro, known for his fight against poverty in Madagascar, where he founded the AKAMASOA association in 1989 to help the poor. The association's mission is to lift people out of the degrading conditions in which they live, restoring their dignity by giving them a roof over their heads, work and education.
The press trip gave the journalists gathered in Antananarivo the chance to explore a wide range of current issues: the growth of the island's tourism industry, the challenges facing the vanilla trade, education and healthcare, the Scattered Islands, relations between Madagascar and France, green bonds, the fight against poverty, the upcoming presidential election, access to clean water and sanitation, land reform, and regional development planning.
