They are called the “gang of 31”, the number of Socialist MPs who abstained on Tuesday. Much ado about nothing: 31 votes do not even make a blocking minority; yet their mere existence served as a reminder to the head of state on behalf of the most deprived: a surge of “the left” that no one believed in any more. Manuel Valls earned his lawyer’s stripes; he delivered a real plea, dramatising the situation. He used every register to draw a tear from anyone willing to hear or listen.
