These two major religious festivals fall at the same time this year. An opportunity to reflect on the contemporary world, writes Sihem Souid.
Eid al-Adha (the Great Feast), also called the Feast of Sacrifice, is the most important festival in the Muslim calendar. It began this Saturday, the day after the start of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), the most intense and solemn moment in the Hebrew calendar. It is the day when Jews repent of their sins, a day of rest, fasting and prayer. Wrongs committed against another person must be repaired before Yom Kippur, which is devoted only to God. Eid al-Adha, for its part, commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) submission to God, who ordered him to sacrifice his son to show his devotion. At the last moment, the angel Gabriel sent a sheep to take the child’s place.
